This is a portrait of a nocturnal wild child.

I developed a scent based on this painting for my fragrance line COGNOSCENTI. The scent needed to be loose, dark, uplifting and not too flowery. The internal illumination reminded me of black licorice. Dark, earthy and sweet with a surprising sharpness. Anise, Fennel and Tarragon all are anisic (licorice like). Tarragon is defined as sweet, anisic and green. It aligned with the particular green quality I get from the art and became the central ingredient for the fragrance. The portrait is kissed by pink even though many of the botanicals are weeds and seed pods. I used a synthetic “pink” floral note, Florosa. It is a “general floraliser and can be taken in a number of different odour directions from herbal through floral to citrus”. The Browns, Purples, Golds and Light Greens can likewise be translated to essential oil ingredients. The ones that match and play nicely with Tarragon are: Vetiver, Cedarwood (browns), Lavender (purple) and Labdanum (gold). The initial mix needed a bit more “heart” and a denser base so I added a hint of Anatolian (Turkish) Rose to round it out and Patchouli to dirty if up a bit and pull the center down.

Notes: Tarragon, French Lavender, Florosa®, Iso E Super®, Anatolian Rose, Labdanum, Cedarwood, Vetiver and Patchouli
